Topamax®, also known by its generic name topiramate, has been linked to cleft lips and cleft palates in children. Topamax® is a drug used to treat epilepsy, psychiatric disorders and migraines. It is manufactured by Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Medical studies have shown that the use of Topamax® during the firt trimester of a mother's pregnancy significantly increases the risk of cleft defects in children. The FDA has issued a warning related to this risk.
Cleft defects can significantly effect a child's life through their appearance, their ability to speak clearly and their ability to eat. Surgery is often required, however, depending on the severity of the defect, scarring is still likely permanent.
Topamax® and its generics still remain in distribution despite these known risks.
