St. Jude Medical ICD and CRT-D Devices have Premature Battery Failure
St. Jude Medical Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillators (CRT-Ds) are devices that can pace slow heart rhythms, and also provide electrical shock to stop dangerously fast heart beats. These products have been affected due to premature battery failure.
The ICD and CRT-D models at issue were manufactured before May 2015, and include the following:
- Fortify VR
- Fortify ST VR
- Fortify Assura VR
- Fortify Assura ST VR
- Fortify DR
- Fortify ST DR
- Fortify Assura DR
- Fortify Assura ST DR
- Unify
- Unify Quadra
- Unify Assura
- Quadra Assura
- Quadra Assura MP
Because of the problems associated with the batteries in these devices, some batteries have failed within 24 hours of a patient receiving an alert. Ordinarily, there is a 3 month lead time to replace the device once an alert is provided.
Presently, there have been 2 deaths related to this defect, since shock therapy could not be provided due to premature battery depletion. Almost 400,000 devices are affected.
