Lawyers Investigating Outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease at Consolidated Precision Products
One person is dead and 10 others have been inflicted with Legionnaires’ disease in Lake County, Ohio. Health department investigators believe that there may be a link between the outbreak and Consolidated Precision Products (CPP) in Eastlake, Ohio. CPP manufactures highly complex components for aerospace, military defense and industrial gas turbines.
The Legionella bacteria, which causes Legionnaires’ disease, has been identified in the cooling towers at CPP’s plant. At least 3 people, including the one that died, contracted the disease at the plant while 8 others that live within a 5 mile radius of the facility came down with the disease.
The company released a statement, which reads:
“Consolidated Precision Products’ independent test results recently confirmed the presence of elevated levels of the Legionella bacteria in one of the cooling towers at our Eastlake, OH facility. After these tests were taken, the facility’s production and cooling water systems, including the cooling towers, were cleaned and disinfected by an experienced industrial water treatment company in accordance with recommendations and protocols from the Ohio Department of Health. The cleaning and disinfecting activities that we conducted are the recommended course of action to remedy Legionella bacteria growth in cooling towers. No Legionella bacteria was detected in post-cleaning test results. We have kept our employees informed of the activities at the facility and are fully cooperating with the appropriate federal, state and local health agencies.”
Legionella bacteria can travel through the air, and people that are immunocompromised can contract Legionnaires’ disease if inhaled.
