Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer
Since talc does not break down in the body, when used in the genital area it can travel to a woman’s ovaries, which can cause irritation and an increased risk of ovarian cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the genital use of talcum powder as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
Landmark Verdicts in Talcum Powder Cases
In 2016, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $72 million in damages to the family of a 62-year-old woman who died from ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for feminine hygiene for more than 35 years. The lawyers for the victim alleged that Johnson & Johnson knew of the powder’s dangerous propensities, but failed to warn consumers.
Soon thereafter, a Missouri jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $55 million in damages to a woman who developed ovarian cancer after using the company’s talc powder for decades. As a result of her diagnosis, she had to undergo a hysterectomy and related surgeries.
In October 2016, Johnson & Johnson lost a third straight trial with a St. Louis jury awarding a California woman more than $70 million. The claimant had used J&J’s baby powder for feminine hygiene for more than four decades until her ovarian cancer diagnosis.
Johnson & Johnson is still facing almost 1,700 talcum powder cancer lawsuits.
